The Armor of God

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Spiritually Dressed For Success
Pr 20:18 (NIV) Make plans by seeking advice; if you wage war, obtain guidance.

The purpose of this Bible Study is to consider and meditate on the Scriptural meaning of each piece of the armor of God, so
that we might stand firm in the battles of life.
Eph 6:10-17 (NIV) ...Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armour of God so that you can take
your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the
authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on
the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have
done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled round your waist, with the breastplate of
righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this,
take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and
the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Why Spiritual Armor?
Rom 13:12 (NIV) The night is almost gone, and the day is near. Therefore let us lay aside the deeds of darkness and put on
the armor of light.

Jer 46:3-4 (NIV) "Prepare your shields, both large and small, and march out for battle! Harness the horses, mount the
steeds! Take your positions with helmets on! Polish your spears, put on your armour!"

1 Cor 14:8 (GLT) For if a trumpet gives an uncertain sound, who will get himself ready for war?

Stand!
Luke 21:36 (NIV) "Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you
may be able to stand before the Son of Man."

Mal 3:2 (NAS) But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears?..

1 Cor 10:12-13 (NIV) So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall! No temptation has seized you
except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you
are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.

Jude 1:24 (Wey) But to Him who is able to keep you safe from stumbling, and cause you to stand in the presence of His glory
free from blemish and full of exultant joy...

Jas 4:7 (NAS) Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

The Belt of Truth
Eph 6:14 (NRS) ...fasten the belt of truth around your waist...

Isa 11:5 (NIV) Righteousness will be his belt and faithfulness the sash round his waist.

Ex 12:11 (NIV) This is how you are to eat it [the passover lamb]: with your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your
feet and your staff in your hand...

1 Kings 18:46 (NIV) The power of the Lord came upon Elijah and, tucking his cloak into his belt, he ran ahead of Ahab all the way
to Jezreel.

Eph 4:25 (NKJ) Therefore, put away lying, "Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor."

  • Blessed are they which do Hunger and Thirst
    after Righteousness.
  • Righteousness, a Response to a Holy God.
  • How to Know if you Hunger and Thirst after
    Righteousness?
  • For They Shall be Filled.
The Beatitudes demonstrate the way to blessedness in Christ's kingdom
is far different from what the world perceives of righteousness. The Study
"Blessed are they which do Hunger and Thirst" covers the following topics:
III. How to Know if you Hunger and Thirst after Righteousness?

How do I know if I Hunger and thirst after righteousness?

          1.        Do you find yourself in Romans 7 all the time, saying, “O wretched man that I am! who shall
deliver me from the body of this death?  Romans 7:24

          2.        Do you feel constant pain of always falling short? That is a symptom of one who’s seeks God’s
way.

          3.        Does anything external satisfy you? Do you find that things have an influence on how you feel?

          4.        Do you have a great appetite for the Word of God? Jeremiah 15:16 If you’re
hungering and thirsting after righteousness, you will have such an appetite for the Word that you will devour it.

          5.        Are the things of God sweet to you? Trials can be as sweet as the good times because God is
in them and is working His purpose, making us more righteous. Proverbs 27:7

          6.        Is your hunger and thirst unconditional? Do you say, “I want Christ and my sin.”

If you’re not hungering and thirsting after righteousness you need to ask yourself, “am I a Christian who is
living in sin,” or maybe I am not a Christian at all. Isaiah 26:9 says, “With my soul have I desired thee in the
night; yea, with my spirit within me will I seek thee early.”
Psalms 119:20 says, “My soul breaketh for the longing that it hath unto thy judgments at all times.”

David thirsted for God diligently and early. The wise virgins had their oil before the bridegroom came
Matthew 25:1. There are some people who are going to thirst too late, and they are going to be like the rich
man in Luke 16:24.

They might be heard saying, “Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip
of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame” Luke 16:24. Thirst now, and be
filled.

IV. For They Shall be Filled.

They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat.
Revelation 7:16

What happens to those who hunger and thirst? “They shall be filled.” Filled means “to be absolutely
satisfied.” God wants to make us happy and satisfied.

When we seek God’s righteousness, he grants it. Psalms 107:9 says “He satisfieth the longing soul, and
filleth the hungry soul with goodness.” King David wrote ”But they that seek the LORD shall not want any
good thing.” (Psalms 34:10).  In Psalms 23: he noted “I shall not want,” and “My cup runneth over.” (vv.1,5)
Jeremiah 31:14 says, “‘My people shall be satisfied with my goodness,’ saith the LORD.”

In John 4:14 Jesus told the woman at the well, “Whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall
never thirst.” In John 6:35, He said, “I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger.”

Jesus satisfies; and yet there is a blessed dissatisfaction that wants even more and will be satisfied only
when we see Jesus Christ. A person who is seeking the kingdom of God has a consuming ambition, not for
power or pleasure, not for possessions or praise, but for righteousness.
I. Blessed are they which do Hunger and Thirst after Righteousness.

Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. Matthew 5:6

This is a strong statement. Food and water are necessities, and here Christ is saying you need
righteousness like you need food. Our physical life depends on food and water; our spiritual life depends on
righteousness.

Jesus said happiness is brokenness, happiness is mourning, happiness is meekness, happiness is
hungering and thirsting after righteousness. Notice how the result of each of those fit together. “Theirs is the
kingdom of heaven; they shall be comforted; they shall inherit the earth; they shall be satisfied.”

Jesus knew people were hungry and He offered Himself as “the bread of life” (John 6:51). He knew they
were thirsty and He offered Himself as “living water” (John 4:10).

And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that
believeth on me shall never thirst. John 6:35

Jesus was talking about hunger and thirst to people who understood this kind of want. The Greek verbs are
very powerful. Peinao means to be needy, to suffer deep hunger. The word dipsao carries the idea of genuine
thirst. Jesus puts the strongest physical impulses in a continuous action, the ones who are hungering, the
ones who are thirsting.

II. Righteousness, a Response to a Holy God.

The righteousness of thy testimonies is everlasting: give me understanding, and I shall live. Psalms 119:144

Righteousness, in the Greek dikaiosuna, or justification, means “to be right with God.” The only real
happiness to life is to be right with God.

This points to two things: salvation and sanctification. Somebody who hungers and thirsts after
righteousness seeks salvation. He sees his sin, he sees his rebellion, he sees himself separate from a holy
God. He is broken, mournful, meek, and he wants very much to restore himself to God. He wants forgiveness,
and so he hungers and thirsts after the righteousness that comes in salvation. it is a desire to be free from self.
It is a desire to be free from sin–
its power, its presence, and its penalty.

They also hunger and thirst for sanctification, an increasing holiness. It is a desire to be more and more like
Christ. This is a mark of a Christian. We keep hungering and thirsting to desire virtue, a greater purity. We
never get to the place in which we think, “I’ve arrived.” Such a thought is a most tragic attitude, both by
unregenerate people who think they have saved themselves and by Christians who think they have arrived.
Children of God
never stop hungering after righteousness. David wrote in the Book of Psalms:

As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.
Psalms 17:15 (and I will not be satisfied until I do)
