The Armor of God

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Spiritually Dressed For Success
Pr 20:18 (NIV) Make plans by seeking advice; if you wage war, obtain guidance.

The purpose of this Bible Study is to consider and meditate on the Scriptural meaning of each piece of the armor of
God, so that we might stand firm in the battles of life.
Eph 6:10-17 (NIV) ...Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armour of God so that you can
take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers,
against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly
realms. Therefore put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your
ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled round your
waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from
the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the
flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Why Spiritual Armor?
Rom 13:12 (NIV) The night is almost gone, and the day is near. Therefore let us lay aside the deeds of darkness and
put on the armor of light.

Jer 46:3-4 (NIV) "Prepare your shields, both large and small, and march out for battle! Harness the horses, mount
the steeds! Take your positions with helmets on! Polish your spears, put on your armour!"

1 Cor 14:8 (GLT) For if a trumpet gives an uncertain sound, who will get himself ready for war?

Stand!
Luke 21:36 (NIV) "Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and
that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man."

Mal 3:2 (NAS) But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears?..

1 Cor 10:12-13 (NIV) So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall! No temptation has seized
you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But
when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.

Jude 1:24 (Wey) But to Him who is able to keep you safe from stumbling, and cause you to stand in the presence of
His glory free from blemish and full of exultant joy...

Jas 4:7 (NAS) Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

The Belt of Truth
Eph 6:14 (NRS) ...fasten the belt of truth around your waist...

Isa 11:5 (NIV) Righteousness will be his belt and faithfulness the sash round his waist.

Ex 12:11 (NIV) This is how you are to eat it [the passover lamb]: with your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals
on your feet and your staff in your hand...

1 Kings 18:46 (NIV) The power of the Lord came upon Elijah and, tucking his cloak into his belt, he ran ahead of Ahab
all the way to Jezreel.

Eph 4:25 (NKJ) Therefore, put away lying, "Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor."

III. Why is Meekness Necessary?

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you
a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: 1 Peter 3:15

  Meekness is necessary because:

          1.        It’s the only way to be saved. Psalms 149:4
          2.        It’s commanded by God. Zephaniah 2:3
          3.        It’s necessary for receiving and giving out His word. James 1:21
          4.        It’s the very reason for existence - to glorify God. 1 Peter 3:4

Jesus came in humility and self-denial saying that it’s not the self-sufficient, the self-
righteous, the proud, the strong, the arrogant, the confident, and the religious who enter His Kingdom. It is the
broken and the mourning and the meek and the hungry and the thirsty and the merciful and the pure and the
peacemakers and the persecuted and the reviled and the slandered who never retaliate. They are the citizens
of His Kingdom.

IV. How to Know You are Meek.

With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Endeavouring to keep
the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Ephesians 4:2-3

Examine your heart. Do you exhibit self-control? Do you get angry, do you react, or do you retaliate only
when God is dishonored?

Do you always respond humbly and obediently to the Word? If you’re meek, you will.

Do you always make peace? Meekness forgives and restores. That’s why Ephesians 4:2-3 says we are to
be characterized with all lowliness and meekness, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of
peace.

V. For They Shall Inherit the Earth.

Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. Matthew 5:5

The word inherit in the Greek means “to receive an allotted portion.” Inherit is a future tense verb. We’re
going to reign with Jesus Christ. The Scriptures say, “Therefore let no man glory in men. For all things are
yours; Whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come;
all are yours; And ye are Christ's; and Christ is God's.” 1 Corinthians 3:21-23

What Jesus means here is that when we enter His kingdom, we come into the original inheritance of
dominion over the earth that God gave to Adam. It’s paradise regained.  The people in the Kingdom shall
inherit the earth. The only ones who enter His kingdom are the ones who are broken over their sins, not the
ones who think they have no sin.

Psalms 149:4 says, “For the LORD taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation.”
One day He will execute vengeance on the nations. He will bind their kings with chains and their nobles with
fetters. One of these days He’s going to gather up the wicked, take it all away from them, and give the new
earth to His own. Jesus Christ will set up His kingdom and He will reign for a thousand years and we will
reign with Him. Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath
no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.
Revelation 20:6
I. Blessed are the Meek.

Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. Matthew 5:5

The word “meek” comes from a Greek word praos, and it means, basically, “Mild,
gentle, and soft.” A meek person is someone who is gentle, mild, tenderhearted, patient and submissive.
Meek was often used to describe a soothing medicine, a gentle breeze, a colt that had been broken and
domesticated. Further, it was a characteristic of Jesus. Second Corinthians 10:1 and Matthew 21:5 talk about
the meekness of Christ. The latter says, “Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass,
and a colt the foal of an ass.”

Meekness is a gentleness and mildness and a subdued character, but it is not weakness. It is power under
control. It is a by-product of self-emptying, of self-humiliation, of
brokenness before God.

Meekness does not mean impotence. Solomon wrote in Proverbs 25:28  “He that hath no rule over his own
spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.” In other words, a person has power but no control
over it. It’s like a destroyed city. On the other hand, “He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he
that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city” (Proverbs 16:32). To rule the spirit is meekness. To be out of
control is to lack meekness.

Meekness is not cowardice nor wishy-washy lack of conviction. Meekness says, “In myself, nothing is
possible, But in God, everything is possible.” Meekness says, “For me, I offer no defense. For God, I’ll give
my life.” It is not passive acceptance of sin; it is anger under control. it is holy indignation. And to such a one
God promises the earth.

II. Meekness, a Response to a Holy God.

The meek also shall increase their joy in the LORD, Isaiah 29:19

Meekness is different from being broken in spirit, though the root word is the same. In some verses in the
Bible these words could be used interchangeably, but there is a definite distinction. Broken in spirit focuses
on my sinfulness. Meekness focuses on God’s holiness.

In other words, I am poor in spirit because I am a sinner, and meek because God is so holy in comparison.
Broken in spirit is negative and results in mourning. Meekness is positive and results in seeking
righteousness. That’s the beauty of the sequence, of the progression in the Sermon on the Mount. First, there’s
the brokenness, the tremendous sense of sinfulness. But there is no despair because you begin to see the
other side of it. You see a holy God and begin to hunger after His holiness.

God’s standard has always been the same. In the Old Testament. David wrote in Psalms 22:26, “The meek
shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the LORD that seek him: your heart shall live for ever.”
Everlasting life belongs to the meek, not the proud.  David also wrote, “The meek will he guide in judgment:
and the meek will he teach his way.” (Psalms 25:9)

God always identified with the meek. They are a priority with Him. For the meek, there is salvation, blessing
and joy.
