The Armor of God
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Spiritually Dressed For Success
Pr 20:18 (NIV) Make plans by seeking advice; if you wage war, obtain guidance.
The purpose of this Bible Study is to consider and meditate on the Scriptural meaning of each piece of the armor of
God, so that we might stand firm in the battles of life.
Eph 6:10-17 (NIV) ...Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armour of God so that you can
take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers,
against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly
realms. Therefore put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your
ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled round your
waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from
the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the
flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
Why Spiritual Armor?
Rom 13:12 (NIV) The night is almost gone, and the day is near. Therefore let us lay aside the deeds of darkness and
put on the armor of light.
Jer 46:3-4 (NIV) "Prepare your shields, both large and small, and march out for battle! Harness the horses, mount
the steeds! Take your positions with helmets on! Polish your spears, put on your armour!"
1 Cor 14:8 (GLT) For if a trumpet gives an uncertain sound, who will get himself ready for war?
Stand!
Luke 21:36 (NIV) "Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and
that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man."
Mal 3:2 (NAS) But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears?..
1 Cor 10:12-13 (NIV) So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall! No temptation has seized
you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But
when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.
Jude 1:24 (Wey) But to Him who is able to keep you safe from stumbling, and cause you to stand in the presence of
His glory free from blemish and full of exultant joy...
Jas 4:7 (NAS) Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
The Belt of Truth
Eph 6:14 (NRS) ...fasten the belt of truth around your waist...
Isa 11:5 (NIV) Righteousness will be his belt and faithfulness the sash round his waist.
Ex 12:11 (NIV) This is how you are to eat it [the passover lamb]: with your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals
on your feet and your staff in your hand...
1 Kings 18:46 (NIV) The power of the Lord came upon Elijah and, tucking his cloak into his belt, he ran ahead of Ahab
all the way to Jezreel.
Eph 4:25 (NKJ) Therefore, put away lying, "Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor."

The Beatitudes demonstrate the way to blessedness in Christ's kingdom
is far different from what the world perceives of righteousness.
The Study "Blessed are the Persecuted" covers the following topics:
- Blessed are they which are Persecuted for
Righteousness' Sake.
- Three Kinds of Persection.
- The Promise of Present and Future Glory.
- For They Shall be Inherit the Earth.
III. The Promise of Present and Future Glory.
What is the promise? “Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the
kingdom of heaven.'
Any loss here could never be compared with the gain in God’s Kingdom. Twice Jesus says “blessed.” Those
who would willing stand up for Jesus Christ will know the bliss of obedience and the blessings of being part
of god’s eternal kingdom.
Here are three examples of those who were persecuted for righteousness’ sake:
1. Joseph was persecuted by his brothers for righteousness’ sake. He ended up in a dry well in the
desert. despised and hated. Yet God picked him up and made him prime minister of Egypt.
2. Daniel, for righteousness’ sake, was in the lions’ den, about to be killed by hungry beasts. But
God locked the mouths of those lions and raised him up to be prime minister of babylon.
3. Jeremiah was thrown into a slimy dungeon because of his righteous life. Yet God lifted him up
and made his name, as a prophet, as honorable as anyone’s who has ever lived
If you are willing to pay the price now, God says the glory that shall be revealed is
incomparable. Double blessed are the persecuted, for theirs is the kingdom, and all that the kingdom could
possibly contain.
IV. Rejoice, and Be Exceeding Glad.
Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven. Matthew 5:12
Oh, yes! Rejoice, Jesus said. Cario in the Greek means to be really glad. And if that is not enough, He
added, “Be exceeding glad,” which is agalliasthe and means to jump and skip and shout for joy.
There are two reasons that we ought to be happy about that. The first reason is
“Your reward in heaven is great,” (v.12). Heaven is forever compared to time now which
“A vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away” (James 4:14).
The word great in “great is your reward in heaven” means just what is says. When God says great, he means
great, polus, abundant. It is the fullness of reward.
The second reason that we should be exceeding glad is because they persecuted the prophets who were
before you. They persecuted the prophets of God, and if they persecute you, you are in an elite group.
Persecution is a verification that we belong to a righteous line. Here is the believers’ security. Here is the
climax of the Beatitudes. Jesus offers salvation and tells how to know you have it. It does not come from
some theological prescription. It goes beyond knowing that you made a decision way back when. Your
security comes from knowing that you are living a godly life in the midst of an ungodly world and that you are
being persecuted for righteousness’ sake. When that comes, not only will you be rewarded in heaven, but you
also stand in the line of prophets of God who have received the same persecution through all of history.
Who enters the kingdom of heaven. It is the poor, the meek, the sorrowing, the hungry, the sincere, the
peacemaking, the persecuted. They enter, and the proof of their citizenship is that they are hated by the world.
I. Blessed are they which are Persecuted for Righteousness' Sake.
Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the
kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner
of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for
so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. Matthew 5:10-12
God doubly blesses those who suffer and those who are persecuted. Although persecuted is repeated in two
verses in slightly different terms, this is all one Beatitude. One of the most wonderful guarantees that our
salvation is real is to be persecuted. Philippians 1:29 says, “For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not
only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake.” Now notice also that Philippians 1:28 says, “And in
nothing terrified by your adversaries: which is to them an evident token of perdition, but to you of salvation,
and that of God.”
In other words, when our adversaries come against us, hating the the gospel and hating Christ in us. It is a
sign of their destiny, proof that they are bound for hell. But to us it is an evident sign of salvation. Living the
redeemed life and seeing that the world hated us is
evidence that our salvation is genuine.
When Jesus gave these Beatitudes early in His ministry, He was already hated. In Mark 3:6 the Pharisees
went forth and “straightway took counsel with the Herodians against him, how they might destroy him.” He
had hardly articulated the principles of His kingdom, and the hatred was already beginning to rise.
II. Three Kinds of Persecution.
Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you
falsely, for my sake. Matthew 5:11
How are we to be persecuted? There are three ways mentioned in verse 11:
1. Persecution: The word persecuted comes form the Greek word dioko, that means to pursue, drive,
or chase away. It finally came to mean to harass or treat evilly.
2. Reviling: The word revile comes from the Greek word oneididzo, that means “to defame, rail at,
chide or taunt.” It was used in the crucifixion of Jesus in Matthew 27:44 when they mocked Him, made fun of
Him, reviled Him, scorned Him. It’s to throw something into one’s face, to abuse one with vile, vicious,
mocking words.
3. People falsely saying all kinds of evil against you: Godly living provokes ungodly men to be
resentful. It is the enmity of the serpent against the holy seed.
Why does it have to be like this if we live God’s way in this world? Jesus said to His
disciples, “If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you. If ye were of the world, the world
would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the
world hateth you. John 15:18-19
