The Armor of God
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Spiritually Dressed For Success
Pr 20:18 (NIV) Make plans by seeking advice; if you wage war, obtain guidance.
The purpose of this Bible Study is to consider and meditate on the Scriptural meaning of each piece of the armor of
God, so that we might stand firm in the battles of life.
Eph 6:10-17 (NIV) ...Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armour of God so that you can
take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers,
against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly
realms. Therefore put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your
ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled round your
waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from
the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the
flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
Why Spiritual Armor?
Rom 13:12 (NIV) The night is almost gone, and the day is near. Therefore let us lay aside the deeds of darkness and
put on the armor of light.
Jer 46:3-4 (NIV) "Prepare your shields, both large and small, and march out for battle! Harness the horses, mount
the steeds! Take your positions with helmets on! Polish your spears, put on your armour!"
1 Cor 14:8 (GLT) For if a trumpet gives an uncertain sound, who will get himself ready for war?
Stand!
Luke 21:36 (NIV) "Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and
that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man."
Mal 3:2 (NAS) But who can endure the day of His coming? And who can stand when He appears?..
1 Cor 10:12-13 (NIV) So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall! No temptation has seized
you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But
when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.
Jude 1:24 (Wey) But to Him who is able to keep you safe from stumbling, and cause you to stand in the presence of
His glory free from blemish and full of exultant joy...
Jas 4:7 (NAS) Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.
The Belt of Truth
Eph 6:14 (NRS) ...fasten the belt of truth around your waist...
Isa 11:5 (NIV) Righteousness will be his belt and faithfulness the sash round his waist.
Ex 12:11 (NIV) This is how you are to eat it [the passover lamb]: with your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals
on your feet and your staff in your hand...
1 Kings 18:46 (NIV) The power of the Lord came upon Elijah and, tucking his cloak into his belt, he ran ahead of Ahab
all the way to Jezreel.
Eph 4:25 (NKJ) Therefore, put away lying, "Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor."

The Beatitudes demonstrate the way to blessedness in Christ's kingdom
is far different from what the world perceives of righteousness.
The Study "Blessed are they that Mourn" covers the following topics:
- Blessed are they that Mourn.
- How to Become a Mourner.
- Study Sin in the Scriptures.
- How to Know You are a Mourner.
- For They Shall be Comforted.
III. Study Sin in the Scriptures.
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed,
rightly dividing the word of truth.2 Timothy 2:15
Another way to become a mourner is to study sin in the Scriptures. Sin should be:
1. Confessed. (Job 33;27; Proverbs 28:13)
2. Mourned over. (Psalms 38:18; Jeremiah 3:21)
3. Hated. (Psalms 97:10; Proverb 8:13; Amos 5:15)
4. Abhorred. (Romans 12:19)
5. Put away (Job 11:14)
6. Departed from. (Psalms 34:14; 2Timothy 2:19)
7. Avoided even in appearance. (1Thessalonian 5:22)
8. Guarded against. (Psalms 4:4; 39:1)
9. Striven against. (Hebrews 12:4)
10. Put to death. (Romans 8:13; Colossians 3:5)
11. Wholly destroyed. (Romans 6:6)
IV. How to Know You are a Mourner.
Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way
in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. Psalms 139:23-24
“How can I know if I’m a mourner?” Simple. Are you sensitive to sin? Do you laugh
at it? Do you let it pass by? Do you take pleasure in it? Maybe it’s sin in a moral area, maybe it’s dishonesty
or maybe it’s failure to pray. Perhaps it’s a failure to think good thoughts, failure to be loving. Do you mourn
over your sin?
A second way to know if you’re a mourner is whether you have a sense of God’s
forgiveness. Do you know joy in your life? Do you know real peace, real happiness, real comfort that comes
from a forgiven, cleansed, purified life?
V. For They Shall be Comforted.
Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. Matthew 5:4
Who shall comfort them? Paraclatros, from which we get Paraclete, the one called alongside to help, the
“Comforter”. The Bible is filled with references to God as a comforter (Psalms 30:5; 50:15; Isaiah 5:6-7; Micah
7:18-20; John 14:16). He helps us, He hears our cry, He meets our needs. The Comforter is always there,
beseeching and admonishing and consoling and sympathizing and encouraging and strengthening and
forgiving and restoring.
The Word of God is also a comforter. “For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our
learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.” Romans 15:4 It tells us
about God’s love, it tells us about His forgiveness, it tells us about His help, and it tells us about His
encouragement and presence.
The Holy Spirit comforts us, the Scriptures comforts us, and we comfort each other. When we are comforted,
we are truly happy. Happiness comes to sad people, not because they are sad, but because their sadness
leads to comfort from the scriptures.
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28
I. Blessed are they that Mourn.
Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. Matthew 5:4
The word “mourning” pentheo that Jesus uses in this beatitude is the strongest, most severe of all nine Greek
words used for grief in Scripture. It is reserved for mourning the dead. The word conveys the idea of a deep
inner agony, not just an external wailing.
The Beatitudes began by referring to spiritual bankruptcy and knowing it. That is the intellectual part. “Blessed
are they that mourn” is the emotional part. Because you know you are spiritually bankrupt, your emotion takes
over, and you mourn that bankruptcy.
“Blessed are they that mourn” is contrary to everything we know. The whole structure of our life—the pleasure-
madness, the thrill-seeking, and the money, time, and enthusiasm spent in pursuing amusement and
entertainment—is an expression of the world’s desire to avoid mourning, sorrow and pain.
Only one kind of sorrow brings life, and that is godly sorrow, which leads you to
repentance. Therefore, we can conclude that Jesus is referring in this Beatitude to sorrow over sin. Godly
sorrow is linked to repentance, and repentance is linked to sin. This kind of mourning means being sorry
because you’re a sinner.
For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh
death. 2 Corinthian 7:10
As long as you live, you are to have the same sense of spiritual poverty. The Bible says being poor in spirit
and mourning that fact are characteristics of a real Christian.
II. How to Become a Mourner.
Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh. Luke 6:21
How do you become a mourner? First, eliminate the hindrances to realizing your sin. Eliminate the things that
make your heart hard, that make you resist the Holy Spirit, that make you insensitive. A stony heart does not
mourn. It is void of grace. What makes a stony heart:
1. A Love of sin. - Loving the things of this world more than God (1John 2:15)
2. Despair. - Despair undervalues God’s power. (Jeremiah 18:12)
3. Conceit. - Pride is the worst sin of all.(Psalms 10:4; Proverbs 26:12)
4. Presumption. - Thinking you are saved when you are not. (2Corinthians 13:5)
5. Procrastination. - Not confessing your sins daily. (Psalms 119:60; 1John 1:9)
6. Frivolity. - Not wanting to deal realistically with life. (Ecclesiastes 10:14)
Conviction of sin must precede and follow conversion. That’s the path to blessedness. Some Christians
spend all their lives trying to find happiness. They get some counseling and read a book about it when what
they really need to do is to mourn their own sin. God will comfort them and Jesus said they’ll be blessed
(happy), not in the sense of frivolous happiness; but in the sense of a deep and abiding peace born of a right
relationship with God.

for instruction in righteousness: That the man of
