BIBLE REFERENCE:

Give thanks unto the LORD, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the people. Sing unto him, sing psalms
unto him, talk ye of all his wondrous works. Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the LORD.
Seek the LORD and his strength, seek his face continually.
1 Chronicles 16:8-11

Sing unto the LORD, all the earth; shew forth from day to day his salvation. Declare his glory among the heathen; his
marvellous works among all nations. For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised: he also is to be feared above all
gods.
1 Chronicles 16:23-25

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and
spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
Colossians 3:16

Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms.  James 5:13

Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee. Thus will I bless thee while I live: I will lift up my
hands in thy name. My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips:
When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches. Because thou hast been my help,
therefore in the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice. My soul followeth hard after thee: thy right hand upholdeth me.
Psalm 63:3-8

Make a joyful noise unto God, all ye lands: Sing forth the honour of his name: make his praise glorious. Psalm 66:1-2
Elton Menno Roth - Lyrics & Composer
1891-1951
Born: November 27, 1891, Berne, Indiana.
Died: December 31, 1951, Glendale, California.
HYMN HISTORY:

The author and composer of this favorite gospel song, Elton Menno Roth, was born on November 27, 1891, at Berne,
Indiana.  At the age of fourteen, he directed his first church choir.  Later, he attended the Moody Bible Institute as well
as the Fort Wayne Bible School of Indiana.  Roth continued his music studies with several prominent European music
teachers.   For a time, he traveled extensively with several evangelists as their song leader and choir director.  Mr.
Roth then taught for a period of time at several different Bible schools, and colleges, including a six year period at the
Missionary Training Institute in Nyack, New York.

Elton Roth later moved to Los Angeles, where he became increasingly known as a distinguished church musician,
singer, composer, and conductor.  In the 1930’s, he organized a professional group known as the Ecclesia Choir,
which performed many concerts throughout this country.  Mr. Roth also published many anthems and more than 100
sacred songs, for which he composed the music and generally the text as well.  It is interesting to note, however, that
of all of Elton Roth’s compositions, only this simple gospel hymn, written in his early ministry, is still in general use.

Mr. Roth has given the following details about “In My Heart There Rings a Melody,” written in 1923, while he was
engaged in evangelistic meetings in Texas:
One hot summer afternoon, I took a little walk to the cotton mill just outside of town.  On my way back through
the burning streets of this typical plantation village, I became weary with the oppressive heat, and paused at a
church on the corner.

The door being open, I went in.  There were no people in the pews, no minister in the pulpit.  Everything was
quite, with a lingering sacred presence.  I walked up and down the aisle and began singing, “In My Heart There
Rings a Melody,” then hurried into the pastor’s study to find some paper.  I drew a staff and sketched the
melody, remaining there for an hour or more to finish the song, both words and music.

That evening I introduced it by having over two hundred boys and girls sing it at the open air meeting, after
which the audience joined in the singing.  I was thrilled as it seemed my whole being was transformed into a
song.
The hymn first appeared in printed form in Roth’s Campaign Melodies, published in 1924.  The following year it
appeared in the Hope Publishing Company’s Hymns of Praise, No.2. It has been a favorite with evangelical people
to the present time.
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Life in the late 1800's and early 1900's was much simpler than it is today. It seems that the early hymn writers had a much
closer walk with God than most do today. Many of their testimonies express a keen awareness of the majesty of their Lord
and Savior and the love they felt for Him.  Out of that love they felt for Him their joy overflowed and praise for Him flowed
forth in words and music. Our lives today are cluttered by the desire to obtain things and more things.  People are just to
busy being busy. Take some quite time with the Lord, speak to Him and let Him speak to you through his word.
 Speaking
to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.
 Ephesians
5:19
I have a song that Jesus gave me,
It was sent from heav'n above;
There never was a sweeter melody,
'Tis a melody of love.

In my heart there rings a melody,
There rings a melody with heaven's harmony;
In my heart there rings a melody,
There rings a melody of love.

I love the Christ who died on Calv'ry,
For He washed my sins away;
He put within my heart a melody,
And I know it's there to stay.

In my heart there rings a melody,
There rings a melody with heaven's harmony;
In my heart there rings a melody,
There rings a melody of love.

'Twill be my endless theme in glory,
With the angels I will sing;
'Twill be a song with glorious harmony,
When the courts of heaven ring.

In my heart there rings a melody,
There rings a melody with heaven's harmony;
In my heart there rings a melody,
There rings a melody of love.
