BIBLE REFERENCE:

But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever.
Amen.
2 Peter 3:18

Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. John 5:39

Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I
have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, And be found in him, not having
mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of
God by faith: That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made
conformable unto his death;
Philippians 3:8-10

Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things. Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of
David was raised from the dead according to my gospel: Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds;
but the word of God
is not bound. Therefore I endure all things for the elect's sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in
Christ Jesus with eternal glory. It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him: If we suffer,
we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us:  If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot
deny himself. Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about
words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers. Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that
needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
2 Timothy 2:7-15

And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they
shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I
will remember their sin no more.
Jeremiah 31:34

For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and
am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.
2 Timothy 1:12

For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: Job 19:25

HYMN HISTORY:

The Christian gospel is thrilling to contemplate. On one hand, it is so simple that even a small child can understand
and respond to its basic message–the necessity of placing one’s faith in Christ. Yet, it is so profound that a lifetime is
far too brief to fully comprehend it, since its message is really a person–a growing knowledge of and relationship to the
eternal Son of God. Again and again throughout the ages, sincere men and women have cried out:

“That I may know Him. . . “  “More, more about Jesus. . .”

The author of this hymn text, Eliza Edmunds Hewitt, was an invalid for an extended period of her life. Out of this
experience developed an intimate relationship with God and the Scriptures and a desire to share her feelings with
others through writing. She became a prolific writer of Sunday school literature and children’s poems. Eventually, her
poem came to the attention of gospel musicians such as John R,. Sweney, who began setting them to music. They
collaborated on such favorites as :There Is Sunshine in My Soul Today” and “Will There Be Any Stars in MY Crown?”
Eliza Hewitt has also contributed other gospel hymn texts that are still widely sung today, such as: “Stepping in the
Light,” :Give Me Thy Heart,” and “When We All Get to Heaven.”

Eliza E. Hewitt was born on June 28, 1851, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She graduated as valedictorian of her class
at the Girls’ Normal School in Philadelphia and spent her remanning years in that city. Eliza taught public school for a
time but was soon confined to her bed for a considerable period with a spinal condition. It is thought that this problem
was aggravated by or was the result of being struck across the back with a heavy slate by a boy who was being
disciplined. Eliza’s song, “There I Sunshine in My Soul Today,” is said to have been written as her expression of
gratitude shortly after being relieved of a heavy cast for six months. Eventually, Eliza’s physical condition improved,
and she was able to continue an active life with her Christian ministries. Miss Hewitt was a close, personal friend of
Fanny Crosby, and these two godly women met often for fellowship and discussion of their hymns. Eliza was also a first
cousin of the gospel hymn writer, Edgar Page Sites. In addition to working with John R, Sweney, Eliza Hewitt also
collaborated with such other well-known gospel musicians as William J. Kirkpatrick, B. D. Ackley, Charles Gabriel, E. S.
Lorenz and Homer Rodeheaver. She died on April 24, 1920, in Philadelphia, having made a notable contribution to the
cause of Christ, through her hymnody.

The composer, John R. Sweney, was another of the influential musicians and leaders of the early, gospel song
movement. He personally composed more that a thousand hymn tunes as well editing of being associated with the
publication of more than sixty gospel collections. In addition to working with Eliza Hewitt he collaborated with such
gospel writers as Fanny Crosby in “My Savior First of All”. Other gospel favorites for which Mr. Sweney supplied music
include: “Tell Me the Story of Jesus,”  “Fill Me Now,”  “Take the World, but Give Me Jesus,:  “Victory Through Grace,”
and “Beulah Land.”

John R. Sweney was born in West Chester, Pennsylvania, on December 31, 1837. He became a respected music
teacher and conductor i various schools and colleges around the country. For twenty-five years, Sweney served as a
professor of Music at the Pennsylvania Military Academy. Prior to 1871, most of his musical compostions had been of a
secular nature, A spiritual crisis occurred in his life that year, however, and for the next twenty-eight years, Sweney
devoted his talents to Christian ministries, He became recognized as one of the most successful song leaders of his
time, always in great demand at the large Bible conferences throughout the country. John R, Sweney died on April 10,
1899, in Chester, Pennsylvania. At his funeral Ira D. Sankey sang “Beulah Land,” a gospel song Mr. Sweney had
composed nearly twenty-five years earlier.

John R. Sweney wrote the music especially for Eliza E. Hewitt’s text, “More About Jesus,” and the complete hymn first
appeared in a collection, Glad Hallelujahs, published in 1887, edited by Wm. J. Kirkpatrick and John R. Sweney.
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Is your desire as a Christian to learn more about Jesus each day? Does the very mention of His name cause your mind
to ponder about the love and caring nature of your Lord and Savior, the sacrifice He made to bear your sins on the
cross, how He said the He will go the Father and prepare a place for you and that He will someday return to take you
unto Himself? Live a life that is pleasing to Him and testify to others about His love. As we prepared this Hymn “More
About Jesus” the Hymn “Jesus is the Sweetest Name I Know” was pressing on our hearts so we have included it below.
More about Jesus would I know,
More of His grace to others show;
More of His saving fullness see,
More of His love Who died for me.

More, more about Jesus,
More, more about Jesus;
More of His saving fullness see,
More of His love Who died for me.

More about Jesus let me learn,
More of His holy will discern;
Spirit of God, my teacher be,
Showing the things of Christ to me.

More, more about Jesus,
More, more about Jesus;
More of His saving fullness see,
More of His love Who died for me.

More about Jesus; in His Word,
Holding communion with my Lord;
Hearing His voice in every line,
Making each faithful saying mine.

More, more about Jesus,
More, more about Jesus;
More of His saving fullness see,
More of His love Who died for me.

More about Jesus; on His throne,
Riches in glory all His own;
More of His kingdom’s sure increase;
More of His coming, Prince of Peace.

More, more about Jesus,
More, more about Jesus;
More of His saving fullness see,
More of His love Who died for me.
