BIBLE REFERENCE:
Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second. By
the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. Hebrews 10:9-10
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any
man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath
before ordained that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:8-10
Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: Knowing that Christ being raised from
the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but
in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Romans 6:8-10
Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and
afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our
peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned
every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. Isaiah 53:4-6
For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher
than the heavens; Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and
then for the people's: for this he did once, when he offered up himself. Hebrews 7:26-27
For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven
itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us: Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest
entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others; For then must he often have suffered since the
foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice
of himself. And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: So Christ was once offered
to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto
salvation. Hebrews 9:24-28
But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;
Hebrews 10:12
For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. Hebrews 10:14
For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to
death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: 1 Peter 3:18
Philip P. Bliss - Lyrics & Composer
1838-1876
Born: July 9, 1838, Clearfield County, Pennsylvania.
Died: December 29, 1876, Ashtabula, Ohio. Bliss and his wife died in a tragic train wreck caused by a
bridge collapse. He survived the initial impact, but went back into the flames in an unsuccessful attempt to
rescue his wife.
Burial: The remains retrieved from the Ashtabula disaster were placed in a common grave marked by a
cenotaph in the Ashtabula Cemetery. A cenotaph in memory of the Blisses was also erected in the
cemetery at Rome, Pennsylvania, July 17, 1877.
HYMN HISTORY:
In his book, Memoirs and Reminiscences, George C. Stebbins, also a noted gospel songwriter states that this
hymn is conceded to be the clearest statement of the doctrine of grace, in distinction from the law. to be found in
all of hymnody. It is said that, at the time of Moody and Sankey’s first evangelistic visit to Scotland, in 1873, the
singing of this hymn had more to do than anything else with breaking down the prejudice that existed against
American gospel hymns up to that time. Its teaching was scriptural and in perfect accord with the teachings of
the Scottish divines, who prided themselves on their doctrinal scholarship and purity. The Presbyterians in
Scotland had long insisted that only the Psalms should be sung in church, and then without any accompaniment.
Ira D. Sankey, in his book, My Life and the Story of the Gospel Hymns, relates the following account of his use of
this hymn while conducting a meeting in Edinburgh, Scotland, upon seeing the noted Scottish preacher, Horatius
Bonar in the audience:
Of all men in Scotland, he was the one concerning whose decision I was most solicitous. He was indeed my
ideal hymn writer, the prince among the hymnists of his day and generation. Yet, he would never sing one
of his beautiful hymns in his own congregation, because he ministered in a church that believed in the use
of the Psalms only.
With fear and trembling, I announced as a solo the song, “Free From the Law, O Happy Condition . . .”
Feeling that the singing might prove only as an entertainment and not a spiritual blessing, I requested the
whole congregation to join me in a word of prayer, asking God to bless the truth about to be sung. In my
prayer my anxiety was relieved. Believing and rejoicing in the glorious truth contained in the song, I sang it
through to the end.
At the close of Mr. Moody’s address, D. Bonar turned toward me with a smile on his venerable face, and
reaching out of his hand, he said, “Well, Mr. Sankey, you sang the gospel tonight.” And thus the way was
opened for the ministry of sacred song in Scotland.
“Once for All” first appeared in Bliss’s Sunshine for Sunday School collection, published in 1873, and again in
his Gospel Songs of 1875, which he did collaboration with Ira D. Sankey. Bliss wrote this text after meditating
upon the truth of Hebrews 10:10: “By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus
Christ once for all.”
George C. Stebbins gives this further tribute to Philip P. Bliss, who along with Ira D. Sankey, has been called the
“Father of Gospel Music.”
He occupied a pre-eminence that still stand unrivalled. There has been no writer since his time who has
shown such a grasp of the fundamental truths of the gospel, nor such a gift for putting them into poetic and
singable form as he. In all of his hymns, there was manifest a happy blending of the poet and musician, and
along with it a rare judgement and deep spiritual insight into the need of presenting the saving truths of
Scripture in clear and singable form.
So versatile were his talents, that his gifts as a singer and leader were little less than those he possessed
as a writer of hymns. He had a voice of rare quality and splendid volume, a baritone of extraordinary range
and evenness throughout, and a perfect method of voice production and control. . . He was six feet tall, and
of commanding stature, with features as perfect in form, and eyes that were large and kindly in expression.
he sang without ostentation, playing his own accompaniment. . . His leading was also without display or any
attempt at attracting attention to himself.
Philip P. Bliss was born in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania, on July 9, 838. As a young man, he moved to
Chicago and became involved in the evangelistic ministries of Dwight L. Moody and Ira Sankey. H became one
of the most prolific, gospel song writers of his time, before his tragic death in a train accident at Ashtabula, Ohio,
on December 29,1876, when only thirty-eight years of age.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
In Hebrews Chapter 9 Jesus is called, the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the
redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the
promise of eternal inheritance. For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the
testator. For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator
liveth. A testament is a solemn transaction between God and man, a willing deed of a person, that only takes
effect upon his death. Christ died to obtain the blessings of salvation for us. All, by sin, are guilty before God;
but God, willing to show the greatness of his mercy, proclaimed a covenant of grace. The sacrifice of Christ is
infinitely better than those of the law, which could neither procure pardon for sin, nor impart power against it.
Sin would still have been upon us, and have had dominion over us; but Jesus Christ, by one sacrifice, has
destroyed the works of the devil, that as believers we may be made righteous, holy, and happy. As believers
we know that our Redeemer liveth, and that we shall see him. This is the faith and patience of the church, and
all sincere believers. Our continual prayer as the fruit and expression of our faith should be, Even so come,
Lord Jesus.
Free from the law, O happy condition,
Jesus has bled and there is remission,
Cursed by the law and bruised by the fall,
Grace hath redeemed us once for all.
Once for all, O sinner, receive it,
Once for all, O brother, believe it;
Cling to the cross, the burden will fall,
Christ hath redeemed us once for all.
Now we are free, there’s no condemnation,
Jesus provides a perfect salvation.
“Come unto Me,” O hear His sweet call,
Come, and He saves us once for all.
Once for all, O sinner, receive it,
Once for all, O brother, believe it;
Cling to the cross, the burden will fall,
Christ hath redeemed us once for all.
“Children of God,” O glorious calling,
Surely His grace will keep us from falling;
Passing from death to life at His call;
Blessèd salvation once for all.
Once for all, O sinner, receive it,
Once for all, O brother, believe it;
Cling to the cross, the burden will fall,
Christ hath redeemed us once for all.
